Literature Text

Joseph was quite strong, it seems,
Hardened moving heavy beams,
Toughened from the nails and saws
Stout and firm, with ample cause.

A man posed to meet life's demands,
Skillful builder, calloused hands,
Trained well in demanding art,
But he had a loving heart.

Think of how it was, that day,
When he saw his fiancée
Bearing someone else's child.
His reaction? Kind and mild.

He played such a noble role.
Love, not anger in his soul.
He'd not shame her, though he'd known
That the child was not his own.

Taxes, census, pregnant bride.
David's line, resilient pride.
Filled-up inn, yet he was able
To make a home within a stable.

Then God's will, the Angels' choir,
Awe-struck shepherds, Heaven's fire.
Magi, gifts, a birth to hide--
Herod bid infanticide.

No. Joseph steeled an iron will.
Love and strength availed him still.
Off to Egypt, Babe and wife.
Joseph's strength to shelter life.

Lost long years, his fate unknown--
Loved a boy-child not his own.
Taught Him, trained Him, raised Him well.
That much the results can tell.

Perhaps... a gentle death his wage.
God spared him helpless, hopeless rage
To see Man's Son upon the cross
To witness Mary's baffled loss.

Beyond the tomb, a promised land.
Mansions, by a master's hand...
Paradise, not lost, but won.
Two builders, proud of their shared Son.
A hard poem to write, and I beg the understanding of those of you not of my Faith. This is my first Christmas offering, this year. I've long had such reverence for that quiet, strong and patient man, leading Mary's donkey, loving the Child, and shouldering the awful responsibility Christ's birth thrust upon him.  He defied and eluded a wicked king to save his foster-son, and gave Him a good upbringing, strength, and patience...  Enough to endure the unendurable on one long last journey, bearing a construction of heavy wooden beams...

This is my son, with whom I am well pleased...

A sincerely Merry Christmas.
