Transition

The mermaid in her's growing
Each step leaves one less more.
She has a way of going
Past the streets, down to the shore.
She has a way of sitting,
And, when alone, she sings.
Her hair's more long, more flowing,
Her eyes, unearthly things.

I watch her change, and worry
What will happen when it's done.
She seems so glad to hurry
But she does not want to run.
Her way of walking's altered
Into something rich and strange.
My thoughts of her have faltered
As she glides into her change.

There's something new and gleaming
In the clothing she wears now.
I watch her-is she seeming
To float through air?  But how?
Her chest seems full and heaving
Without the earth's dull weight
I watch, half-unbelieving
As she goes to meet her fate.

She seems so brave and cheerful
Though she'll not be what she was.
At times, I know, she's tearful
But I'm not sure of the cause.
Does she regret what she'll not do,
Or just mourn the delay?
She'll soon be something strange and new,
I'm not sure of the day.

The mermaid in her's growing-
She's heading out to sea,
Each day I look, she's showing
More of what she wants to be.
She's changed in form, and bearing,
And altered in her mind.
And left me, worried, caring,
Like her past life-far behind.
I still know her... But she's so far away, and further every day...

Re-birth? Your writing is moving, thought provoking and very beautiful.

Would you set this to music?

I haven't thought about it--if you can think of a tune, by all means.  There IS a poem by the brilliant Walter De La Mare called 'Little Fan,' which is a very similar poem, mine owes a bit to that.  His was a rare talent.

Just had a read of this. lovely. well written. One of the first images that came to me was the statue of the 'Little Mermaid' at Copenhagen. Strange how poetry can bring back memories and experiences that we had almost forgotten about?

Poetry, done right, is a very powerful art form.

It's unusual; this one seems particularly enchanting and akin to a fairy-tale, and then we hear your inspiration for it, afterwhich it's all the more touching...

A friend of mine slowly turned into a mermaid, then swam away and disappeared in the ocean. I'm happy for her, but... I miss her. Thank you for your appreciation of this poem.

Again another lovely poem! Although there is a solemn side to this poem I found the atmosphere calming and peaceful!

There is such a unrequited yearning in this poem....is sad and lovely at the same time.
