Oh Squall, you finally learned how to depend on someone. OVERVIEW: It was 1999, and Squaresoft was about to reveal the newest Final Fantasy title. At E3 that year, they opened the presentation with this stunning image: ...followed by an impressive video sequence. The lead character, Squall Leonheart, would not be a stunted Popeye-esque emo boy with a freaking gigantic sword; the game would be based in a world where magic has overwhelmed the status quotient and left those lowly humans in the middle - in a way that was frankly really familiar at such a basic level - but through different lenses as always. Guardian Forces, the latest incarnation of Espers or summons or whomever, were creatures that were capable of immense power but held loyalty only to those who controlled them: they had no ethos or wherewithall to individuals, only power.
